On Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, we witnessed the peaceful transfer of power—a historic tradition in American democracy that, up until four years ago, symbolized unity and hope. On this day, however, our newly inaugurated president laid out an agenda rooted in hate, fear, and darkness, starkly contrasting Dr. King’s vision of equality, justice, and love for all people.

As a leader deeply committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and the dignity of every individual, I stand in resolute opposition to President Trump’s executive orders targeting the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, people of color, and low-income individuals. These actions, veiled under the guise of policy, represent a blatant assault on the very principles of justice and freedom that Dr. King championed.
The redefinition of gender to exclude transgender and nonbinary individuals is a cruel and regressive act that erases the identities of millions of Americans and puts their safety at greater risk. At a time when transgender individuals already face disproportionate violence and discrimination, this executive order is a deliberate attack on their dignity and humanity.
Similarly, the termination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs is an affront to the progress we have made in creating opportunities for historically marginalized communities. These programs were designed to address systemic inequities that continue to harm people of color, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and low-income families. Stripping them away is not just a policy decision—it is a declaration that this administration prioritizes division over unity and exclusion over empowerment.
The targeting of immigrants, including the attempt to end birthright citizenship, is yet another example of policies rooted in fear and xenophobia. Immigrants have always been integral to the strength and resilience of our nation. These actions do not make us safer; they diminish our humanity and betray the ideals upon which America was founded.
These executive orders are a stark reminder that the fight for justice and equality is far from over. To President Trump, we say this: You may attempt to sow division, but we will rise in solidarity. You may seek to erase progress, but we will continue to push forward. We will fight these hateful and discriminatory policies through advocacy, legal action, and unwavering resistance.
To our allies and community members: On this day, let us remember the words of Dr. King, who said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Now is the time to stand together, to reaffirm our commitment to justice, and to ensure that every individual, regardless of their identity, background, or circumstance, is valued and protected.
Hate will not win. Fear will not prevail. Together, with love and resilience, we will overcome.
